The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA Standard 211 § 14.2) requires an annual chimney inspection for all residential heating appliances and fireplaces. Sweeping should be performed whenever creosote deposits exceed 1/8 inch or when Stage 3 glazed creosote is identified. Even gas fireplaces require annual checks for nesting debris and acidic condensate degradation.
A Level 2 inspection includes everything in a Level 1 inspection plus accessible basements, attics, and crawlspaces, paired with a motorized 360-degree optical camera lowered through the entire flue. The camera documents internal tile fractures, mortar voids between tile joints, and hidden clearance hazards that cannot be observed from the fireplace opening.
Spalling is driven by freeze-thaw cycles. When water penetrates unsealed masonry or a cracked chimney crown, sub-freezing temperatures cause that moisture to expand by 9%. This internal hydraulic pressure pops the hard protective exterior face off the brick, exposing the softer core. Tuckpointing with period-accurate lime mortar and applying breathable siloxane water repellents stops this deterioration completely.
Once clay flue tiles develop hairline cracks or missing mortar joints, heat exceeding 1,000°F and toxic combustion gases (such as odorless carbon monoxide) can escape into attic spaces or ignite wall framing. UL 1777 listed heavy-gauge stainless steel liners create a seamless, airtight, and insulated sleeve that restores chimney performance and comes with lifetime durability.
We lay heavy-duty canvas drop cloths from the home entry to the hearth and wear clean shoe covers. During sweeping, an industrial triple-filter HEPA extraction vacuum runs continuously at the firebox, maintaining negative air pressure so that airborne soot and creosote dust cannot escape into living areas.
Traditional metal throat dampers inside the firebox are loose-fitting iron plates that allow warm conditioned air to draft out of your home like an open window. A top-sealing energy damper mounts at the very top of the chimney flue, equipped with an airtight silicone rubber gasket that seals the entire stack shut when not in use.
